What fees exist (big picture)
Etsy (typical items): listing fee per item, a transaction fee (a percent of item price + shipping you charge the buyer), and a payment processing fee (percent + small fixed amount). There may be optional ad or subscription fees.
eBay (typical items): insertion/listing allowance (some free per month), a final value fee (percent of the total the buyer pays), and a payment processing fee (percent + small fixed amount). Optional upgrades (bold title, promoted listings) can add cost.
Note: Numbers change by category, location, promotions, and account level. Always check the marketplace’s current fee page before listing.
1-Minute Profit Estimate (works for both)
- Start with price you’ll charge the buyer (item + shipping the buyer pays).
- Subtract marketplace percent (use a safe guess like 15%–20% total for quick planning).
- Subtract payment fee (estimate a small fixed amount + ~3% as a placeholder).
- Subtract cost to ship (your real label cost) + packaging (tape, mailer/box).
- Subtract your item cost (what you paid).
This gives you a conservative profit. If it’s too small, raise price, lower shipping/packing cost, or pick a cheaper service.
Simple Examples (numbers are illustrative)
Example A — Small item in a mailer (Etsy or eBay)
- Price to buyer: $20 item + $4 shipping = $24
- Marketplace & payment (placeholder): ~18% of $24 ≈ $4.32
- Label cost: $3.80 (First-Class, example)
- Mailer + tape: $0.40
- Item cost: $5.00
Estimated profit: $24 − $4.32 − $3.80 − $0.40 − $5.00 = $10.48
Example B — Larger box (watch “DIM” weight)
- Price to buyer: $45 item + $10 shipping = $55
- Marketplace & payment (placeholder): ~18% of $55 ≈ $9.90
- Label cost (example): $10.50
- Box + packing: $1.20
- Item cost: $15.00
Estimated profit: $55 − $9.90 − $10.50 − $1.20 − $15.00 = $18.40
Tip: If label cost spikes, check for dimensional weight or try a slightly smaller box.
